Hints on taking care of elderly yourself

Unfortunately, we all grow and eventually most of us find old age. Everyone before us had the same as did those before them. When it comes to those close to you, whether it is one or both of your parent(s), or anyone else so close that you stay steadily involved in their life at this stage, it can be a lot of work without some planning.

This article attempts to describe some of the things to expect and possible ways to make it go smoother and easier. Of course there are many other answers and ideas as well, and you will want to look further than just here for ideas.

Something that eventually occurs to many people in the area of elderly care, is “Why can’t they just stay put.” This is human nature so don’t look to down on it, however acting on this thought can be the worst. Whoever the elderly person you are considering is, they weren’t born elderly. They’ve lived a whole life of goals, ideals, interests, and other things; some that others might seem pains and tasks. In reality though to them, it’s still comfortable and what keeps them going. These tasks include the usual taking care of themselves, and even shoveling snow sometimes.

Age may limit their ability to do their usual activities, however when possible they may still be able to do some with a little help. Forcing stops when unavoidable may just cause more hurt than the benefit of not having to jump as much.

Many elderly find a daily ritual of reading the obituaries in the news, and the depression that can come from it. These are people they have known for years, and now along with the fact they aren’t around any more, the elderly person you are caring for also has one less person they can keep in touch with. If you watch long enough, you will see occasions where they loose a number of friends in an extremely short time.

Helping them to enjoy those still around, and being sure they can get where they can find some new friends can help in this area. Often there are activities in the community that can help with this. Though there is also the grocery store among other places where they have always run into old acquaintances and caught up renewing a long ago friendship. Keeping them from shopping when they are still partially capable can cause problems in this area
