Eyes - If you wear contact lenses, remember not to leave them in your eyes for too long. Leaving them in for longer than 12 hours (unless they are special lenses) will encourage bacterial growth which could lead to an eye infection. Mouth - Stick your tongue out each morning and have a good look. If it is furry, you might have to brush up on your oral hygiene. If it’s red and sore, this may indicate that you have a deficiency in iron or vitamin B. Have any mouth or tongue problems checked with a doctor if they continue for more than a couple of weeks.
Teeth - Did you know that chilled drinks are less likely to encourage tooth erosion? Using a straw can also minimise the exposure of the teeth to the drink – so pop your drink in the fridge and use some straws. Chest - Australia has one of the highest rates of asthma in the world with 2.2million people affected – that’s 1 in 10! If you are asthmatic, it is important that you find out what triggers your asthma to avoid an attack and discuss a preventative program with your doctor. Some common triggers are weather change, cigarette smoke, dust mites, pets, grass and pollens. Heart - Heart disease kills more women than breast, lunch and ovarian cancers combined. Being overweight increases your risk by two or three times. Exercise and eating heart-healthy foods such as strawberries, spinach, broccoli and oranges will certainly help – so Eat up! The fitter you are, the stronger your back, so visit the gym, go for regular walks, cycle, swim or join a pilates or yoga class to help your back cope with the stress and strain it is placed under. Bowel - Irritable Bowel Syndrome is becoming a common reason for people to consult their GP. If you suffer from IBS try to get active. Many patients feel that hitting the gym or getting regular exercise makes them feel better. Having a healthy diet and not smoking can also help. To lessen your risk of bowel cancel, eat fresh fruit, vegetables and wholegrains. In Europe, a study involving more than 500,000 people revealed that a had a diet high in these foods played a major role in preventing bowel cancer. Legs - RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome) is a movement condition where sufferers find it hard to keep their legs still particularly when they are trying to sleep. Try to reduce your intake of Caffeine as it has been proven to make RLS worse and try to have a hot bath before bed to ease the symptoms.
Feet - Nine out of ten bunions are found in women and footwear is to blame. Tight shoes squash our toes and cause bunions. To avoid this, don’t wear high, pointy shoes and see your GP and wear shoes that don’t put pressure on them. |
